Home to beautiful wooded shoreline stretches, glassy recreational waters, and stunning limestone cliffs and caves, Sturgeon Bay offers some truly remarkable scenery. This lakeside town, centrally located on the Door Peninsula, is the perfect headquarters for visitors looking to explore the rest of Door County.

It’s true that there are many items to check off your Sturgeon Bay bucket list – attending seasonal festivals and enjoying a wine tasting to name a few. But although very charming and relaxing, no activity provides more enchanting beauty than kayaking along the shores of Sturgeon Bay. We’ll just float a few of our favorite places to hop in a kayak your way.

Bay Shore Outfitters

With a healthy respect for the natural landscape and a passion for recreation throughout the Door County community, Bay Shore Outfitters offer great opportunities out on the water. From renting to guided tours, they have multiple options to fit every skill and comfort level.

Rent a recreational or performance kayak or stand-up paddleboard to glide through the gentle waves of Sturgeon Bay on a self-guided exhibition. We recommend you come with experience, if you choose this route.

If you’re a first-time paddler, Bay Shore Outfitters also offer lessons and/or fitness classes to help catch you up to speed. Under the guidance of their experienced staff, you’ll be a pro in no time!

Our Recommendation:

Embark on a guided kayak tour. There are several options at your disposal, including a scenic coastal adventure, family fun, morning light, and sunset tours. Each highlighting unique perspectives of the shore, these tours are sure to satisfy your adventurous side.

Door County Adventure Center

Providing a variety of recreational activities with a customer focus on creating memorable experiences, Door County Adventure Center is certainly a kayaking option to consider. Offering rentals and lessons, they also feature terrific tours and packages.

The tours at Door County Adventure Center come in many forms. Many are event-based, such as fireworks tours near Independence Day and women’s retreat tours over the summer.

Another great possibility, aside from a traditional sunset bridge-to-bridge tour, is the Mink River Estuary tour. An estuary is the geographical area where tide meets a river or stream, and this is one of the most pristine in the country – packed with wildlife and a backcountry feel.

Our Recommendation:

What makes Door County Adventure Center so unique is they have several out-of-water activities, as well. They package these excursions to give you more fun at an affordable cost. Try coupling (or tripling) a Segway tour, zip line ride, and kayak adventure for well-rounded vacation experiences.

Peninsula Kayak Company

Specializing in guided kayak tours along the banks of sunny Sturgeon Bay, Peninsula Kayak Company is a laid back option to explore caves, dunes, islands, and more.

The primary tour options explore limestone caves and crystal clear waters, wetland areas through Logan Creek State Natural Area, romantic sunsets on the coast, and privately guided quests of the bay.

Our Recommendation:

Take your pick. Although we’re a bit partial to Door County sunsets – there’s nothing else like them – all of these options are equally relaxing and enjoyable. Rentals are available, as well, if you’d simply like to float along the shore at your own pace.
